Crochet Chinese Lantern Pattern – Video Tutorial – Lunar New Year
Hello!
It is almost the Lunar New Year and I wanted to share the pattern for the crochet Chinese Lanterns! The Fu (福) character is optional, but I wanted to include it for a more detailed lantern.
Let’s get started!

Materials: Chinese Lantern
3.00 mm Crochet Hook
DK Weight Yarn
Tapestry Needle
A Pair of Scissors
Stuffing
Note: The numbers in the brackets represent the number of stitches in each row
Abbreviations
MR – Magic Ring
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet (DC in UK terms)
ST – Stitch
BLO – Back Loop Only
BL – Back Loop
SLST – Slip Stitch
FO – Finish Off
Pattern:
CH 12 with long tail.
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and till end. Turn. (11)
Row 2: CH 1. SC in each ST. Turn. (11)
Row 3: CH 1. SC in each ST. Turn. (11)
Row 4: CH 1. SC in BLO of each ST. Turn. (11)
Row 5 – 7: CH 1. SC in each ST. Turn. (11)
Repeat Rows 4 – 7 until you have 23 rows total, starting from Row 1.
SLST Row 23 through BL and CH together.
FO with long tail.
Top
Round 1: SC 6 in MR. SLST into BL of 1st SC. (6)
Round 2: CH 1. SC in BLO. SLST into 1st SC. (6)
FO with long tail.
Cut piece of yarn about 15 cm long. Weave both ends into centre of top. Tie knot and pull loop up. Sew top to top of lantern.
Bottom
CH 2.
Round 1: SC 6 in 2nd CH from hook. SLST into BL of 1st SC. (6)
Round 2: CH 1. SC in BLO. SLST into 1st ST. (6)
FO with long tail.
Cut 8 pieces of yarn about 10 cm long. Tie them together and pull each strand through the centre hole.
Sew top and bottom onto lantern.
Trim the tassels so they are relatively even.
